Weekend Reflections
After a week of thinking about clarity, a simple visit reminds me what’s real.
Later today, I’m visiting my mother-in-law at her senior residence. They’re celebrating Thanksgiving, and it feels like the perfect way to end the week.
Holidays have a way of cutting through the noise. In a world of buzzwords, meetings, and endless to-do lists, they are a powerful, clear signal of what’s actually important.
It’s a perfect dose of clarity. And clarity is exactly what I found myself writing about all week long—how to find it, how to create it, and what happens when we don’t have it.
Here’s what I published this past week:
The Burrito Index: A new way to measure a news organization’s health that has nothing to do with traditional metrics and everything to do with... burritos.
So You’ve Got a New Boss. Your boss just changed. I break down the 30/90/180-day plan for how to manage the transition and set yourself (and them) up for success.
I Was Tired of Board-Speak, So I Built This A look at why jargon and vague language hurt mission-driven work, and the free, simple tool I built to start fixing it.
Your Team is Guessing. Stop Them. When your team doesn’t know the “why,” they start guessing. This post is about creating clarity and alignment so they can stop guessing and start executing.
Orange County Has 30 News Outlets We talk a lot about “news deserts,” but what about “news mirages?” I use Orange County as a case study for why the number of outlets doesn’t always equal coverage.
That about covers it. I hope you get a chance to cut through the noise this weekend and find some clarity of your own.
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading Backstory & Strategy this week as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. I’ll be back Monday with more.
Until then,
— yoni
P.S. - If you found this post helpful, would you please consider restacking it and sharing it with your audience?
This spreads the word and keeps me writing the types of content that you have enjoyed.

Couldn't agree more. That line about holidays being a 'powerful, clear signal of what’s actually important' really hit home. It’s so easy to get lost in the daily algoritm of buzzwords and endless to-do lists, only for a real human connection to remind you what truly matters. Sometimes we just need a system reset.
